United States: Doctors have made a guide to help prevent strokes, which are becoming more common among young people. Although many think strokes only happen to older adults, cases in people aged 18 to 44 have increased by nearly 15% over the last ten years. Strokes are also the fifth leading reason of death in the US, causing almost 160,000 deaths each year. It’s important for everyone, especially young people, to know how to stay healthy and prevent strokes!

Of those, more than 800 000 Americans will experience one every year – one every 40 seconds – which can put them at risk of becoming paralysed, have a seizure, lose their memory or experience organ failure.

As reported by Dailymail.co, though the rise is alarming, the American Heart Association recently issued new guidelines, and they mentioned that majority of the stroke is preventable by adherence to Life’s Essential 8.

This is a list of guidelines that have been proved to help ‘prevent’ heart diseases; these include: try to get more bananas in your meals; they recommend the Italian diet.

The paper released on Monday in the Stroke journal occurs as strokes increase in the young by 14.7 % between 2011 and 2022.

Some think the spikes in cases of child obesity, high blood pressure and addiction could be responsible for this while others reason that the youthful populace is more sensitive to stress.

Strokes happen when one of the blood vessels supplying the brain becomes blocked and does not send blood to the brain. Some types of heart disease increasing the risk of the blood vessels to narrow, thus increasing the chances of blockages of the arteries, hypertension and high cholesterol inclusive.

Each year, stroke patients die soon after the attack and the rate is approximately one in six.

The first element on the ‘the essential 8’ is a proper diet because the research already proved that diets with fats, sugars and calories can narrow the arteries and increase risk of stroke.

The specialists mention the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on products that are used in Mediterranean countries, such as Italy and Greece.

These include,  whole grains; fish which is the source of lean proteins, olive oil which is rich in healthy fats, lentils which are plant based proteins and also nuts.

Over mountains of research, investigators consistently point to a protective effect of the eating plan rejecting the probability of heart disease.

For instance, one research done in 2023 discovered that adhering religiously to a Mediterranean diet reduced or lessen the risk of heart disease and stroke by a quarter.

The AHA also suggested cutting down on sodium and ultimately replacing it with the foods high in the potassium as the latter has been shown to help relax blood vessels and help the body to get rid of more excess sodium lowering the blood pressure.

High-potassium foods includes the fruits like bananas and the apricots, vegetables like sweet potatoes and parsnips, fish like cod and snapper and the nuts and the seeds and the CDC estimates that nine in the 10 Americans consume too much salt and almost 3,400 milligrams on average and this is one-third more than AHA’s daily recommended limit of 2,300.

However, the experts suggested getting at least 150 minutes of the exercise per week which is in the line with the USDA’s Dietary guidelines for Americans.

The experts wrote that physical activity has been shown to reduce the blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammation, weight, blood vessel function and insulin resistance.

The recommended 150 minutes of the moderate activity, such as brisk walking, per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity such as running per week.
